What is Wellness? 8 Things to Keep in Mind






Wellness is not the absence of disease or illness. In fact, there is a lot more to wellness than just healthy eating and exercise. True wellness involves all aspects of the body, mind, and even our social lives.


Cherry Health’s website describes “wellness” like this:


“Wellness is the presence of purpose in life, active involvement in satisfying work and play, joyful relationships, a healthy body and living environment, and happiness. Wellness means overall well-being. It incorporates the mental, emotional, physical, occupational, intellectual, and spiritual aspects of a person’s life. Each aspect of wellness can affect overall quality of life, so it is important to consider all aspects of health.”


As you can see, wellness and optimal health can be a little complicated. So, besides physical health, what do we need to think about?

Intellectual health means finding ways to expand your knowledge, learn, and grow. An easy way to do this is to read as many different books as you can and as much as you can. You can also listen to the news, learn about new cultures, or take a class. 



Environmental health means keeping yourself in nurturing, comfortable environments that stimulate you and support your well-being. This could mean keeping your house clean or improving your neighborhood with a community garden. Every place you go should satisfy or inspire you.



Emotional health is often overlooked in today’s busy world. This means having good coping skills to deal with stress and maintaining positive relationships. Make sure you take mental breaks from your work, have someone to talk to about your problems, and are able to express yourself in a positive way.



Financial health can be hard to achieve, since it’s hard to feel satisfied and relaxed when bills are stacking up. Try not to let money get in the way of your happiness, and make sure you have the right resources to help you out of financial struggles.



Social health is feeling a sense of belonging, trust, and connection from a good support system. This support system is often made of friends, family, coworkers, or neighbors. It’s important to stay connected with the important people in your life and to keep a sense of trust in your relationships. It’s also sometimes a good idea to step away from people that hold you back from being your best self.  



Spiritual health does not just mean that you are in good standing with your church, although that might be part of your personal definition. This factor refers to feeling satisfied with your sense of purpose and meaning in life overall. It’s healthy to grow and to change your answers to life’s big questions.



Occupational health means being satisfied with and feeling a connection to the work that you do. Not everyone has their dream job, and that’s okay. Any job can have good parts and bad parts, but it’s best if you try to remember the positive impact you make with your work, even if it’s small.


Not all of these factors are always in our control. However, it’s good to keep them in mind when trying to achieve your best self.
